This comes as no surprise to anyone who saw the replay of Forte twisting the ankle under Charles Woodson's knee. It's horrendous news for Forte's fantasy value, as he was playing at perhaps the highest level of his career. High-ankle sprains typically keep a skill-position player sidelined four weeks, limiting the ability to make cuts at peak form even longer. It's quite possible Forte may not recapture his pre-injury explosiveness the rest of the season. A must-own in all formats, Michael Bush will take over as a three-down back in the meantime.

If Smith is being forthright here, it's a huge break for owners. High ankle sprains cost players a month or more while the recovery timetable for regular sprains is much shorter. "Matt did go down with an ankle injury. It's not a high ankle sprain, as has been reported," Smith said. Still, Smith conceded that Forte remains sore and the team therefore felt the need to bring back Kahlil Bell. We'd be absolutely stunned if Forte was able to play against the Rams in Week 3.

Forte supposedly doesn't have a high-ankle sprain, but his absence today obviously bodes poorly for his Week 3 status. We'll know more by the time Friday's injury report rolls around, but owners holding out hope of no missed time for their RB1 need to be ready to start someone else.

Smith stated that Forte has made "good progress," and missing just one game would obviously be well ahead of schedule for a player initially feared to be in danger of missing 4-6. The Bears face the Cowboys on Monday Night Football in Week 4. While we're not overly optimistic about Forte's chances of playing in that game, he appears to be recovering faster than anticipated.

Forte sustained his injury on Sept. 13 and hasn't practiced since. The Bears insist he's avoided the dreaded high ankle sprain, but there's no doubt that he rolled the joint pretty good. By sitting out until Week 5, Forte will have given his ankle 3 1/2 weeks to heal. Michael Bush will continue to act as the workhorse for now.

The Chicago Tribune's Brad Biggs stated on NFL Network that he now believes Forte will probably play Monday night "barring a setback." According to fellow beat writer Gene Chamberlain, Forte's ability to cut and run has been apparent at practice. While the early-week tea leaves suggested the Bears might take a conservative approach to Forte's return, it now appears that the odds are better than even that he suits up at Dallas.

FOX Sports' Jay Glazer reports Matt Forte (ankle) is expected to start against the Cowboys.

In other words, it doesn't look like this will be a token activation where Forte receives only a handful of carries. Forte figures to be spelled frequently by Michael Bush, particularly around the goal-line, but is shaping up as by far the best fantasy bet in the Bears backfield for those who own both players.

Per CBS' Jason La Canfora, Matt Forte's ankle injury "does not appear to be severe enough to threaten him long-term."

La Canfora does add that Forte's status for Sunday's game against the Seahawks is "in question." Therefore, we can gather that he has a Grade 1 or 2 sprain, but has avoided the dreaded "high" variety. Considering the Bears are 8-3 and have a very capable backup in Michael Bush, we suspect that Forte will be handled with kid gloves here. Expect coach Lovie Smith to finally address the situation when practice resumes on Wednesday. The Chicago Sun-Times is reporting that there is some "optimism" Forte will be able to play against the Seahawks Sunday.

Matt Forte (ankle) particiapted in Wednesday's practice, and looked "fine," according to coach Lovie Smith.

He was officially limited. The consensus among the Bears' press corps is that Forte indeed appeared "fine," putting him on track to suit up for Week 13. Michael Bush could still be in for a few extra carries against the Seahawks, but Forte has clearly avoided a dreaded high-ankle sprain. Plan on starting him as you normally would.

Matt Forte (ankle) tells the Chicago Sun-Times that he will play versus the Seahawks in Week 13.

He was officially limited again in Thursday's practice. Forte has been sleeping in a hyperbaric chamber and seeing a chiropractor in an effort to accelerate the healing process. We suspect Forte's workload will be limited after Michael Bush's solid game against the Vikings last week. Rotoworld ranks Forte No. 24 among running backs for Week 13.
